Regular and proper handwashing saves lives

Seconds save lives, wash your hands! This has been reminding us of experts around the world for more than a year. As far as this habit holds us back, it has found itself again during this pandemic.

How long does the coronavirus survive in the external environment?

Viruses, like other microorganisms, survive in the external environment depending on the type of virus or the surface on which they survive.

In particular, the SARS-KoV-2 virus, which causes the disease kovid 19, survives up to several hours in aerosol, four to five hours on copper, about an hour on cardboard, but most importantly, two to three days on plastic surfaces and steel surfaces, emphasizes Professor Dr. Lilia Markovich Denich, an epidemiologist.

- This is not the leading route of transmission of the virus, but primarily of the drip and drip nucleus, but it is possible that it is also transmitted indirectly. If we touch contaminated surfaces and do not do hand hygiene, but touch the mouth, nose or eyes, given that the entrance places of this virus are the conjunctiva and the mucous respiratory system, we can thus introduce the virus into the body, " adds the doctor.

How to wash your hands

Back in 2006. this year, the World Health Organization founded the Alliance for Patient Safety, whose Serbia became a member in 2008. For many years, a National Hand Hygiene Program has been established, both in medical institutions and for the general population.

- It is not enough just to wash your hands, but it is important how and for how long. Between the fingers, first of all, because there are most microorganisms lingering there, thumbs, too, and always at least 20 seconds, " explains the professor.

WHO has also promoted a new remedy, which until now has only been used in a hospital environment, and is now available to anyone based on alcohol and glycerin, which protects the skin from damage.

If we wash our hands with soap and water, the procedure should last up to 40 seconds, and the alcohol product simply wipes until the alcohol evaporates, should last 20 seconds.

Hospital infections

This type of infection is still colloquially referred to as hospital infections, and in fact it refers to all potential infections that can occur in any health care facility, but also in a nursing home, for example, or an ambulance.

This type of infection is not solely the result of negligence or error, says Professor Liliana Markovic Denic, but the microorganisms migrate from the endogenous flora that reigns in these places or the flora of the patient himself.

It is important to keep in mind that 80 percent of all hospital infections are transmitted through hands, direct or indirect contact, touching contaminated surfaces.
